The area is most famous for the Gilbert’s Bar House of Refuge, built in 1876 as one of ten U.S. Life-Saving Service stations along Florida’s east coast. It was designed to provide shelter for shipwreck survivors along the notoriously dangerous “Treasure Coast.” Sailors would wash ashore and find food, water, and rescue here.
